Break Some Rules

whipcreamEvery once in awhile you need to break a rule. No not the ones that could truly hurt someone, but those that the “professionals” say not to do. (but are really fun) You know what kind of rules I am talking about. You should never jump on a trampoline with more then two people. You should not waste a whole day playing video games. Or you should never remove the tag from your bed mattress.

I have a food handlers license and one of the rules I broke has to do with sanitary food handling. Did you know you should never spray whipping cream from a can into numerous kids mouths. That of course can spread germs and kids might get sick. However, if you want to have some fun with a large group of kids walk around with a can of whipping cream and fill their mouths up. Let the fun begin.

Just last week it was spring break for some of the kids that come to our neighborhood homework club and they were having a hard time focusing. So I walked around with a couple of cans of pure love: whip cream in a can. (cheese in a can will also have the same effect)

We had several extra cans hanging out in the fridge and I didn’t want them to go to waste. Like little birds hearing their parents return to the nest with food, the kids would tilt back their heads and get a mouth full. For some I would “accidentally” miss their mouth and get it up their nose. I do have some rules for this rule breaking session, only those that are sitting quiet get to partake.

It made me think about some of the other bigger rules that I like to break. One is that churches have too many differences to truly get along. Or my favorite is that churches and schools should never work together. One inside the church rule is that we count how many butts we have in the chairs on Sunday. I would rather count the butts you get out of the chairs to serve others) A personal rule that I also break is riding my motorcycle in the rain.

Many times people like to break the rules just to be different or rebellious. I think there should be some guidelines (not actually rules) to breaking rules. Like I put people first before the organizations. I don’t take no as no the first couple times. And a must for all rule breakers is that you have read and know the rules. Nothing worse than an ignorant rule breaker.

What rules should you break this week?

So who gets to decide which rules we get to break? You, me, the guy down the street? Everyone can decide for themselves? Why are some rules ( For God is not a God of disorder but of peace, as in all the meetings of God’s holy people 1 Corinthians 14:44) hard and fast and others are not (Women should be silent during the church meetings. It is not proper for them to speak. They should be submissive, just as the law says 1 Corinthians 14:34)?

I find that people are most willing to break those rules that they don’t like when they know there is little consquence for breaking the rule (for example people that don’t like to drive the speed limit only do so when there are no police around). These people are not disobeying because they think the rule is wrong, they just feel it is inconvenient at the time to obey.

It also seems to me that rule breakers are more likely to break rules that others impose on them rather than the rules they make for themselves. And if someone else breaks a rule that the rule breaker has made, then look out! “Why isn’t my dinner ready when I get home?” “Why don’t you understand the NO means NO!”, “Can you believe how rude the Christian was to the checkout person. the just makes me so angry!” Maybe instead of trying to break rules that others have made, we should be looking at the rules we have made and breaking those first (And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye[a] when you have a log in your own? Matthew 7:3)
