I have talked to several young people lately that feel the need to go to college so that they can be responsible. They feel the pressure to do what is expected of them and “become an adult”. These are young people with great dreams to make a real difference in this world, but feel the obligation to be adults.

They want to be responsible in this world, buy they have this eternal compass that seems to be pushing them somewhere else. Somewhere away from the pull of this culture. But they feel like they are being irresponsible.

Mark Batterson would call this being Irresponsibly Responsible. We cage ourselves from being who Christ wants us to be, by saying we need to be responsible. Jesus wants to release the lock and set us free to live Responsibly Irresponsible.

If one was to look at the life of Christ in today’s light you would say he was very irresponsible. He didn’t take care of his family, he didn’t have a retirement, he didn’t pay his employees, he didn’t even pack a lunch. But he did some great things being Responsibly Irresponsible.

He lived outside of the cage of “being responsible” and didn’t use his responsibility as an excuse to not do great things for his dad.

How do you think we can live a responsible irresponsible life today?
How can we give up what we think is essential to do things that are essential?
